Incoming Exchange Students



Q1 What is the process for selection as Exchange student at IIT Delhi? When can I proceed on Exchange?
Nominations are sent by the Home Institutions.
Application deadline :
  • 31st May for 1st Semester (July to December)
  • 15th November for 2nd Semester (January to June)


Q2 Is there some minimum Academic criteria I should satisfy for being eligible for the Exchange?
No.

Q3 Where do I find Exchange opportunities at IIT-Delhi?
You must get in touch with the International office in your University to get details of opportunities at IITD. IITD usually communicates directly only with the University/Institutions regarding exchange opportunities.
But if you have queries about courses etc. you may write to:

Q4 If you wish to know about MoUs between your Institution and IITD you can write to :

Q5 Is it possible to come on exchange if there is no MoU between my Institution and IITD.
No. It is not possible.

Q6 Whom do I need to get in touch with immediately after receiving selection notification from IITD?
(1) UG Students: drugs@admin.iitd.ac.in : Assistant Registrar (UGS)
(2) PG Students: drpgs@admin.iitd.ac.in : Deputy Registrar (PGS)

You need to communicate your date and time of arrival and requirement of accommodation. You must ensure that you have confirmations about all these issues from IITD before you leave for IITD. All communications should be had only with the two officials indicated above, unless they specifically indicate someone else for some purpose. Usually, students on IITD campus help Intl exchange students in travelling from Airport and then in settling on campus, Hostel related issues. But we suggest that you must NOT surpass the above two officials. You should reach out to such students only through the above two officials so that the Institute is aware of your movement. Once you have been introduced by the officials with the students then you can directly communicate with these students for any help.

Q7 How do I get to know where and when to attend classes? How do I know about registrations etc. on the campus?
Registration etc. will be done on arrival. Venue for classes can be seen at timetable.iitd.ac.in.

Q8 How does a candidate come to know the Courses he can do during the exchange.

Q9 Is financial Support available for the exchange

Q10 What about Credit sharing at the end of the Exchange?
The Exchange partner will share the Credits and Grade earned by you during the Exchange to the Institute.

Q11 Will I get accommodation at IITD? Will I have to pay for accommodation, local travel? How much do I have to pay?
Ans: The Partner Institute will provide all help in locating the accommodation. The accommodation has to be paid for by the exchange student. Local travel has also to be paid for by the Exchange students.

Q12 What about Visa? Who pays the Visa fee? Where do I get the necessary documents for Visa? How much does it usally cost to procure Visa?
The Visa fee has to be borne by the exchange student. The invitation letter is provided by the host Institution. You may get other documents required from the concerned Academic unit of the Institute.

Q13 Are there specific Language requirements for Exchange?
Medium of instruction and evaluation is English.

Q14 Do I have to have Insurance before proceeding on Exchange? Who pays for it? How much does that cost usually?
Yes . IITD insists on it for incoming exchange students. The student has to bear the cost for it.

Q15 How much money does it require to sustain a good lifestyle at Delhi during exchange.
This is year 2017. If you fee, housing, fooding is taken care of, a sum of Rs 5000/- per month is an amount good enough. A break-down of the tentative expenses can be found below:
  • General ETH fees: none for exchange students
Information on fees for visiting students
  • Study materials (books, chemicals, ...): Rs. 2500-3500 depending on the field of study
  • Room rent/Hostel Fees: Approx. Rs 18000 ( depends on hostel allotted )
  • Food : Included in the room rent/hostel fees

Q 16 When do I get my student ID card, and how can it be used?
Dining Services provides each student with a photo identification card, which is the official College ID. New students will have their photo for their ID taken during Orientation.

Q 17 How do I sign up for a meal plan?
All incoming students are automatically enrolled in a particular hostel as soon as they are registered. The hostel fees in itself includes the messing fees as well. It covers all the 3 meals of the day for the duration of the entire semester.

Q 19 When are the end-of-semester examinations and session examinations held at IIT-Delhi?

Q 20 Do you provide a pickup service from the airport?
Yes, we do provide a pickup service from the airport. You can let us know about your arrival date and our international Programs member will be there at the airport to help you reach the campus.

Q 21 What is the Indian grading system?
Letter grades indicate a student's academic performance. Each letter grade has a numeric value which is used to calculate a GPA (Grade Point Average), on a scale of 10.0.

Q 22 Will I have a personal tutor?
You can have both a professor and/or a student to act as your personal academic advisor for the period of your stay. Your tutor will advise on your choice of courses, and will receive reports on your progress. Your student tutor will also be available to advise on academic or personal problems, and can help you locate the relevant professional service at IIT-Delhi.

Q 23 How do I access health care at IIT-Delhi?

As a full-time student, you have access to health care services at the IIT-Delhi on-campus hospital. As soon as you are registered here at IIT-Delhi, you shall receive an medical booklet along with your ID Card. You can use your medical booklet to avail the services at the IIT-Delhi hospital which come at a nominal cost. In case of serious health issues, you can also visit the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), India’s largest public hospital, which is only about a 15 min distance from IIT-Delhi.





Outgoing Exchange Students



Q1 What is the process for selection? When can I proceed on Exchange?
The UG/PG Section advertise the possible Mobilities in the month of December of the year previous to the Mobility
The candidates apply for the mobility
The candidates are selected the basis of their performance in a written test followed by an Interview
The Candidates are informed about the possible vacancies available with various Universities
The candidates are allotted the universities on the basis of Merit (performance in Written Test and Interview)
The exchange is allowed in the 3rd Year. Most students prefer 5th Semester for the Exchange. However, some students prefer 6th Semester. This is also permissible if other conditions are satisfied.

Q2 Is there some minimum Academic criteria I should satisfy for being eligible for the Exchange?
You need to maintain a CGPA of 8 in order to qualify for being considered for Exchange .

Q3 Can I explore the exchange opportunity on my own?
Yes. But the exchange is possible with only such Institutions with which IITD has an MoU to that effect. Please note that, exchange requires the MoU as well as a specific Agreement for Mobility. This is a document usually available as an attachment to the MoU but in some cases the Universities sign an MoU but do not sign the Agreement. In such cases the exchange will not be possible.
Also, at times there exists an MoU as well as an agreement but due to mismatch in Semester scheduling or for non-availability of financial support etc. from the other University, an exchange may not take place.

Q3 How does a candidate come to know the Courses he can do during the exchange.
The Candidates are required to explore the websites and other resources related to the Universities they are interested in Exchange with to ascertain the Courses they would like to pursue.

Q4 Is financial Support available for the exchange
Some Universities provide financial support to the exchange students. INSA, UBC etc. are few of those. However, the candidate must check this up with the Institute before taking a final decision based on Financial support.

Q7 Can I have some support for my International Travel apart from the provisions on MoU?
At present No. However, you may get in touch with Dean (AAIP) with your specific case.

Q8 What about Visa? Who pays the Visa fee? Where do I get the necessary documents for Visa? How much does it usally cost to procure Visa?
The Visa fee has to be borne by the exchange student. The invitation letter is provided by the host Institution. You may get other documents required from the concerned Academic unit of the Institute.

Q10 Are there specific Language requirements for Exchange?
Yes. With some Universities there are language requirements. Please have a look (Annex—A)

Q11 Do I have to have Insurance before proceeding on Exchange? Who pays for it? How much does that cost usually?
Yes most Universities insist on it. IITD insists on it for incoming exchange students. The student has to bear the cost for it. It usually costs ……………………………………………

We try top obtain the fact sheets of various partner Institutes. If they are available, they will be updated at……………………………………………

Q13 Do I need to submit a physician’s report?
Yes most universities require you to submit a review of your medical history, a complete physical examination test, and also give self-verification of basic vaccinations.

Q14 What are the tuition fees associated with studying on exchange?
You will be assessed the full time tuition fees in the same way as though you were studying here in IITD. Fee payment must be made to IITD before you leave on exchange. Your residence, and other such fees, must be paid to your host university. These fees will vary by university; please consult their website for more information.

Q15 Is it possible to complete my final year while on exchange?
Students who plan to complete their final degree requirements on exchange are strongly advised to meet with their departmental advisor to ensure that their remaining course requirements can be completed at another university.

Q16 Will I graduate on time if I complete my last year on exchange?
Your exchange credits cannot be transferred until we receive an official copy of your transcript directly from your exchange university. In some cases, transcripts from the host exchange partner may arrive too late for processing in time for graduation. In these cases, you will be required to postpone your graduation until the following term.

Q17 I don’t have any electives left. Can I still go on exchange?
You can still study on exchange even if you do not have electives left; however, you must consult with your departmental advisor to be sure that your remaining courses can be completed at another university.

Q18 I cannot find the course offerings for my exchange university. What can I do?
You can look at past university calendars on the exchange university website to get an idea of what was offered in the past. You can use the Registrar’s Office website to determine which courses have been offered and approved in the past. Alternatively, you can email AAIP at …………………………………… to request contact information for the exchange university.

Q19 I am a scholarship student. Will I lose it if I go on exchange?
Please consult with the UG section to determine eligibility criteria for maintaining you scholarship.

Q20 What kind of courses can I take on exchange?
You may take courses that correspond to a discipline taught at IITD. You should avoid taking courses that do not directly correspond to one of our departments as it will be unlikely that another department will grant credit for a course outside of their discipline.

Q21 When is the best time to go on exchange?
Most undergraduate students go on exchange the year before their final year.

Q22 How many courses can I take on exchange?
Students are adviced to enroll for courses equivalent to IIT Delhi, having credits upto 26.
